We are in the midst of December, and I know many of us are probably growing tired of the activities we have committed to. I used to feel like this was something that just couldn’t be helped. Wouldn’t it be unkind to our extended family and friends to cut back on our commitments and focus more on our own family?
Fortunately, no. So often, we put burdens on ourselves that we do not need to bear. Most people would not even realize if we were not at the get together. We really can decide to prioritize our own need for a restful and happy season instead. This sometimes feels counterintuitive and tough, but I know we can do it!
Winter is the season of rest, and if we need to rest, we should. Many times we will be able to create better memories with our families and friends if we slow down. Sometimes we move so fast, and it all seems like a blur!
Peace is usually illusive when we have too much on our plates, also. Guys, I want to feel at peace. If that means I need to slow down, then so be it.
It is good idea to sit down with our family members and ask what is most important to them during this season. You might be surprised by the answers you receive.
My youngest children are in love with a light display close to where we pick up our groceries. Weekly, we have been swinging by for them to watch the “dancing lights” on the way home. This is during the middle of the week, so traffic is at a minimum. This has created such a fun memory for them without much effort or time involved.
If you give gifts to others, remember that what matters most is the thought and effort you put into it. A thoughtful gift doesn’t need to cost much money, and if you are crafty, a handmade gift is a wonderful touch. The older I get, the more I realize that it really is the thought that counts.
We need to remember that our time is precious, and we can make this season a joyous and peaceful time for our families.
