We Need to Hurry

,

Hello friends, and welcome.

As I type, it’s Sunday afternoon. My husband and I ran this morning in preparation for an upcoming half marathon. The goal is to finish without injury. As I continue in my running hobby, the more I am content to run for the health and fun of it. Personal records aren’t really that important in the grand scheme of things. I just want to come out of the race happy and healthy.

On the other hand, I have been taking my philosophical and spiritual reading time very seriously. A whole new world has opened up to me, and I am intent to learn as much as I can. Sometimes I read too much too fast. I have to slow down to digest the information!

I almost laughed when I read this quote from Marcus Aurelius today.

“Not just that every day more of our life is used up and less and less of it is left, but this too: if we live longer, can we be sure our mind will still be up to understanding the world – to the contemplation that aims at divine and human knowledge? If our mind starts to wander, we’ll still go on breathing, go on eating, imagining things, feeling urges and so on. But getting the most out of ourselves, calculating where our duty lies, analyzing what we hear and see, deciding whether it’s time to call it quits – all the things you need a healthy mind for…all those are gone.

So we need to hurry.

Not just because we move daily closer to death but also because our understanding – our grasp of the world – may be gone before we get there.”

I feel you, Marcus.

It’s funny how the words of a Roman Emperor can resonate so well with a 21st century housewife.

I feel like I need to hurry. There is so much I want to grasp about the world, but what happens if I do not reach my goal before my healthy mind is gone.

At the same time, I am determined to trust the process. I now understand that my thoughts and beliefs are building on what I learned before. Growth and change sometimes takes time.

But we still need to squeeze the most out of each day we can. Each day is a gift to us to learn, change, grow, love, and heal. May we do it well.

Thanks so much for stopping by today, friends!
