Summer Solstice Ideas and Blessings

As a mom, I really enjoy celebrating nature with my children. And what better time to do so than when the seasons change?

I live in the Northern Hemisphere and Eastern Time Zone, and this year the summer solstice for my family is on June 20, 2025 at 10:41 PM. The solstice doesn’t occur when the hemisphere is closest to the sun, but rather when its pole reaches its maximum tilt towards the sun.

There is evidence that the summer solstice has been celebrated by cultures around the world since ancient times. The event was always marked with significance, and was usually accompanied by festivals, holidays or rituals. Many European cultures see the summer solstice as the middle of summer, and call it Midsummer. Which makes sense to me!

The summer solstice is a time of life, growth, and productivity. Life is exploding everywhere. For me, it is a time to stand in awe at the beauty of creation, and to blossom fully into whatever my calling may be.

I love to be outdoors during both sunrise and sunset during solstices and equinoxes. I feel like this is a good way for my body to stay in rhythm with the world around me.

If you have children, they can join you as you sit quietly during these special times on this special day. If the year was separated into light and dark, the summer solstice is right in the middle of the brightest half of the year. While as a woman, I’ve grown to love the quiet creativity and rest that the darker half of the year symbolizes, I enjoy the summer season, too.

Other ideas to explore with your children might include taking a nature walk, or making a sun catcher. It might be fun to journal throughout the day, making special note of beautiful things you experienced while in nature. We might plant sunflowers, and and have a bonfire at day’s end.

In the early Christian tradition, the summer solstice was associated with the birth of John the Baptist, and one of his feast days falls on June 24th. This timing is meaningful because John the Baptist was seen as a “lamp” pointing to Christ. John the Baptist’s prophecy of “He must increase, I must decrease,” can be seen as symbolic of the summer solstice, since the days begin to grow shorter little by little once this solstice passes. The flames of a bonfire are symbolic of John the Baptist’s light, and a campfire is a fun way to celebrate this feast day.
