Large Family Second Semester Homeschool Curriculum Plan

text on shelf

I can hardly believe our second semester is almost here! Our first semester went really well, and we plan to continue along while making a few tweaks.

This year, we have a preschooler, first grader, third grader, fifth grader, eighth grader, and twelfth grader. Three of my children have already graduated. Whew! I am super gentle with my preschooler’s schooling, which is helpful. We are working through The Good and the Beautiful’s Preschool curriculum super slowly and encouraging a lot of play and books.

Our days are scheduled so my children complete most of their independent work in the morning, and then I am available to help them in the afternoon. This works really well for us. Perhaps I will share about our homeschool schedule soon!

For this post, I will share the curriculum we are using for each grade level. Hopefully you will find this information helpful. Don’t be afraid to change what you’re using if it isn’t working for your family! I have to do this on a regular basis.

My first grader is using…

CLE Learning to Read supplemented with The Good and the Beautiful Booster Book A. Reading doesn’t come easily to my daughter, and honestly, she hates CLE Learning to Read. This program has worked well for most of my children, and not so well for two of them so far. I probably will be switching things up before too long.

The Good and the Beautiful Math 1. My daughter loves this!

Harcourt Science Student Edition: Grade 1

Harcourt Social Studies Student Edition: Grade 1

My third grader is using…

The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts 3. She loves it!

Additionally we are supplementing with Mondos Press level Opal for reading. I know that the Good and the Beautiful’s LA program includes reading, but I like to add a little more reading instruction to our day.

Science Grade 4: A Closer Look

Masterbooks America’s Story 1. Overall I like this curriculum, but I think I might look for something else next year because I’d rather our history not contain a faith element. Finding just the right fit in a history curriculum can be really hard!

Intermediate Orchestra. This is a homeschool music program that my children attend.

pencils in stainless steel bucket

My fifth grader is using…

The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts 5

Mondos Press Level Coral Reading

Teaching Textbooks 5

Science Grade 4: A Closer Look

Masterbooks America’s Story 3

Intermediate Orchestra

My eighth grader is using…

The Good and the Beautiful Language Arts 7

Mondos Press Silver Collection Reading

Teaching Textbooks Pre-Algebra

Glencoe Integrated Science Grade 8

Masterbooks The World’s Story 3

Historical/Critical Biblical Studies: This semester we will be going through Who Wrote the Bible? by Richard Friedman, Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman, and a series about Bible Prophesy Through the Ages on James Tabor’s Youtube Channel. Last semester we read Paul and Jesus and The Jesus Dynasty, both by James Tabor. We also watched a series about Death and Afterlife in the Ancient Western World on James Tabor’s Youtube Channel.

Intermediate Orchestra

My 12th grader is using…

HOLT McDougal British Literature Grade 12. I purchased the textbook and typed out a lesson plan for my daughter to use.

Consumer Mathematics by Abeka

General Science 2 by Masterbooks

Glencoe World Geography and Cultures. I purchased the textbook and typed out a lesson plan for my daughter to use.

Dave Ramsey’s Homeschool Personal Finance

Historical/Critical Biblical Studies. I do this class with both my 8th and 12 grader together. The resources I’m using are listed in my eighth grader’s section.

Advanced Orchestra.

So there you have it! I tried to link as many resources as I could.

I’m really looking forward to January to see how everything goes. We are new to Mondos Press, but I really think we are going to like it.

I hope you have a great semester, friends!

  1. How do you like the Consumer Math from Abeka? We did lifepacs and the information was decades old. I wanted something for my youngest but knew we couldn’t use Alpha Omega for that.

    1. It is OLD. We used it for the first time about eight years ago, and it was dated then. We are using it since we already have the textbook. I’m not sure if it has been updated since we bought it.

      1. Good to know. I wish they would update it. I’m sure it’s a ton of work. I have a friend who writes math curriculum, maybe she would be interested in writing an up to date consumer math. hmm
