Little Ways to Help the Environment

Whew, it has been a good day! As I type, it is Friday. For now, we are done with orchestra practice, which means our Fridays are now free.

While I don’t mind taking my children to extracurricular activities, this one is far. It is nice to not spend the day in the car!

Lately, I’ve tried to find ways to be more environmentally conscious. I really want to somehow make a small difference in making the world a better place.

Learning about the negative impact humanity has had on our planet is disheartening. And I know I have been a part of the problem! Little by little, I want to change that.

Today, I might share a few things I’ve done this Friday that might fall into this category.

First of all, no driving. I usually leave the house three days a week, but now that our Fridays are free for the season, that bumps it down to two. I’m going to try my best to stay at home on Fridays. This shouldn’t be difficult for me at all, since I don’t love to drive.

We made sure our bird bath and feeders were nice and full. Guys, we have so many songbirds on our property. It is a joy to watch them! Today, we spotted a pair of cardinals making a nest in a rose bush.

I went on a little walk, noting invasive non-native plant species that we need to get rid of. Right now, a lot of Japanese Honeysuckles are climbing our trees. I would like to take care of this soon.

While on this walk, I found several native wildflowers in the middle of our yard. I dug one of them up and transplanted it so it wouldn’t be mowed down. The Picture This app on my phone identified it as Black Eyed Susan.

Speaking of mowing, I used to be the cut grass queen. Uncut grass was my pet peeve. I’m really working on it, and we are letting our grass go much longer between mowings. We are also working on creating a landscape that doesn’t need to be mowed at all.

I finalized some Mother’s Day thoughts today, too. I hope to go to a local Native Plant Nursery to pick out some things for a new planting area we are working on. I also plan to add another bird bath and feeder here once it is complete.

Finally, I signed a couple of environmental petitions that Instagram recommended to me. It only took a couple of minutes. For example, I signed a Scenic America petition to keep trees from being clear cut on public lands for billboard visibility.

I know these aren’t big things, friends. But I’m a believer in doing what I can, no matter how small.

I hope your day is fantastic. Thank you so much for stopping by!
