I’m forty-five years old, and cleaning has always been a challenge for me. Unfortunately, it usually is on the bottom of my list of things I’d *like* to do!
But a clean home is always a blessing both to us and our family and so cleaning is a worthy investment of time. Even when we don’t feel like it, ha!
Spring is the perfect time to clear the stagnant energy of winter and allow the freshness of spring to enter our homes. When spring arrives, many of us feel the urge to open the windows, let fresh air into our homes, and begin clearing away the heaviness of winter. Spring cleaning is often thought of as a long exhausting list of chores, but it can also become something gentler and more meaningful. Let’s think of it as a way to refresh our home, mind, and spirit one small step at a time.
The truth is, spring cleaning doesn’t have to be perfect or overwhelming to make a difference. Simple changes can create a lighter, calmer atmosphere that helps your home feel peaceful and renewed.
One of the easiest ways to begin is by starting small. Instead of trying to clean the entire house in one day, choose one drawer, one shelf, or one corner at a time. Small wins build momentum and help prevent burnout. Even fifteen focused minutes can completely change how a space feels. I know I love to break my cleaning time into small increments.
Spring is also a wonderful time to declutter. During winter, homes naturally collect extra blankets, papers, clothing, and miscellaneous items that quietly pile up over time. While decluttering, ask yourself:
- Do I use this?
- Do I love this?
- Does this add peace or clutter to my home?
Letting go of unused items can feel emotionally freeing. A simpler space often creates a calmer mind. But if you find yourself emotionally attached to an item, don’t be afraid to keep it.
Opening windows is another simple but powerful form of spring cleaning. Fresh air changes the energy of a home almost instantly. Sunlight, gentle breezes, and the sounds of birds outside can make everyday cleaning feel less like a chore and more like a seasonal ritual of renewal.
It’s also nice to bring natural elements indoors during spring. A vase of fresh flowers, a bowl of lemons on the counter, potted herbs near the kitchen window, or lightweight linens can brighten a room without spending much money. These little touches help a home feel fresh, alive, and welcoming.
Spring cleaning doesn’t only apply to physical spaces. This season can also be a time to simplify routines and release unnecessary mental clutter. You might decide to:
- Unsubscribe from overwhelming emails
- Reduce screen time
- Create quieter morning routines
- Organize your planner or calendar
- Let go of unrealistic expectations
It’s my goal to do several of these things. Remember, sometimes the greatest form of spring cleaning is creating more breathing room in daily life.
Another helpful idea is creating simple cleaning rhythms instead of waiting for everything to become overwhelming. For example:
- Mondays for laundry
- Tuesdays for bathrooms
- Wednesdays for paperwork
- Fridays for fresh sheets and tidying bedrooms
Gentle routines often feel more sustainable than marathon cleaning days. I know this is certainly true for me.
It’s also important to remember that your home doesn’t need to look perfect to be beautiful. A peaceful home is not about spotless counters every moment of the day. It is about creating a space where people feel safe, loved, comfortable, and able to rest.
For mothers especially, spring cleaning can easily become another source of pressure. But your worth is not measured by perfectly organized closets or magazine-worthy rooms. Homes are meant to be lived in, always. Progress matters more than perfection.
You can even turn spring cleaning into a calming ritual rather than a stressful task. Light a candle, open the windows, play soft music, diffuse essential oils, or take breaks with tea on the porch. Small moments of beauty can make ordinary chores feel more grounding and enjoyable.
Spring itself reminds us that renewal happens gradually. Your home doesn’t have to be transformed overnight.
This season is simply an invitation to refresh what feels heavy, simplify what feels overwhelming, and create space for peace in both your home and your heart.
Sometimes the simplest changes are the ones that make the biggest difference.
