Finding Balance in Fall

—

It’s officially fall!

Fall is by far my favorite season. It’s always held a special place in my heart because my birthday is in October. But as the years have passed, I’ve grown to love it more and more.

I can’t tell you how happy I was on the first day of fall! I stepped outside just as the sun was rising, and then made it a point to take a walk as the sun set to observe the twelve hours between the two events. Even though it didn’t really feel like fall on the 22nd of September in our neck of the woods, I wanted my body to understand that change is in the air.

The autumnal equinox symbolizes a time of balance before we enter the dark half of the year. And there’s nothing wrong with darkness. Light is fading into a time of rest and restoration. Feminine energy is also associated with darkness which represents the mysterious, unseen, and hidden depths of life.

When fall begins, we are moving symbolically from a time of abundance into a time of rest. It’s a great time to ask ourselves a few questions like:

What have I accomplished over the summer?

Where am I currently overextended?

What do I need to put down?

How can I add more restful rhythms into this season?

In this new beginning it’s time to align our daily habits with nature by honoring both light and dark, activity and rest. There’s a few ways I hope to accomplish this in my home.

First of all, I plan to make sure that I have a clear boundary between activity and rest within my home. I’m a crafter, and my fabric is currently spilling out into areas of my home that are meant to be restful. I need to make a few clutter-free boundaries between where I work and rest.

I hope to journal through commitments, habits, and stressors that no longer serve me and then let those things go! Fall is a fresh start to me, in a lot of ways. And just as the trees release their leaves, we too can release what’s impeding our health and growth.

It’s also a great time to look at our diets and begin to add more nourishing warm and grounding foods like soups and root vegetables as we welcome the dark half of the year.

This time of transition is a balancing act, and when we learn to accept both the heavy and light aspects of our lives our path becomes much clearer.

I believe the seasons are a blueprint that God has given us to follow in our own busy lives. It can be very easy to let the seasons come and go without giving them much thought, especially in the modern world we live in. But connecting with nature in this way can really help us to find both clarity and wholeness.

And today? Ah, today the air has finally cooled after a storm system rolled through during the past few days. I think our temperatures might dip into the 50s by tomorrow. I can’t wait for it to officially be “sweater weather”!
