Tending to Our Flock of Chickens

One of the first things we did after deciding to become more self sufficient is buy some baby chicks! Chickens are truly the gateway farm animal. They are easy to care for, and fresh eggs in your backyard are pretty awesome.

It has been getting very cold lately, and so I was very excited to have been sent a sample of Grubterra to offer my chickens. Food is comforting, and can extra treats can help fatten them up for the winter.

I posted a video on my Youtube channel about trying it out. They really loved it, and gobbled it up!

Grubterra is sustainably produced feed. It is Black Fly Larvae, instead of the Mealworms I’ve fed my chickens in the past. Black Fly Larvae contains 75% more calcium than Mealworms, which is great for our birds.

During the winter, we also tarp the windows in the chicken coop overnight to make it more comfortable for them. We live in Georgia, so it normally doesn’t get very cold. Today was an exception however. The temperature at sunrise was in the 20’s (Fahrenheit).

We have a small yard fenced off for them, because I’m nervous to let them free range. Our coop is a converted metal shed, which works out just fine. We plan to let our flock naturally drop in number, and then make a nicer small coop for them. This should happen within a few years.

Do you have any chickens? If so, I’d love to hear about them!
