It has been a lovely winter thus far, and I’ve enjoyed carving a little extra reading time into my mornings since our early winter rhythm is a sometimes slower than the rest of the year.
At least for the past several months, this is true.
As I often do, I’ve been pondering about ways to grow closer to God, and to live my life in tune with both my spirituality and femininity.
While I don’t take the Bible literally, I really enjoy searching the Christian scriptures for truthful allegories that I can apply to my life. I’d like to share some of my thoughts with you, and maybe even start a little series out of it. In my opinion, feminine wisdom has mainly been written out of the Bible, and I love to look for nuggets which can encourage women in their spiritual walk.
So today, I’d like to talk about when the women found the empty tomb after Jesus’ ascension. The following passage is from the book of Luke, where several women were pictured going to the tomb. In other books, not as many came. For example, in the book of John, only Mary Magdalene was pictured visiting the tomb.
Just a little interesting tidbit of information for you. Now, let’s get to our reading.
Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’ ” And they remembered His words. Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles.
Luke 24: 1-10 (NKJV)
I find it interesting that in this story, women were the ones who discovered that Jesus’ body was gone. They were entrusted with this knowledge, and through them, others would find out about an event that changed the course of western religion…the possibility of overcoming the problems of this world and finding unity with God as Jesus demonstrated.
Women are often the holders of deep intuitive knowledge. It’s in our bones. Unfortunately, not everyone feels this way. For example, in the text the next passage reads:
And their words seemed to them like idle tales, and they did not believe them. (Luke 24:11)
In many cultures through time, womanly advice has been dismissed. But often, women have a deep inner knowing that should be listened to.
God has graced women with an emotional intelligence that can be difficult for men to understand. But when this emotional intelligence tempers the practicality of the masculine way of thinking that’s readily accepted in our culture, truth can be seen much more clearly.
Women are often the bearers of truth, and of good news.
And usually, we’re the ones who see it first.
“Intuition is a spiritual practice, and it is essential for women.”

I’d like to encourage you to listen to your intuition today. Trust it. If it gives you a sense of peace, follow it and see where it leads. I bet it will not steer you wrong.
